Around 60 members from Michael’s hometown club Nemo Rangers in Cork traveled to Dubai for a 5-day tour recently where they visit bed some famous landmarks, visited the Irish Ambassador’s residence, and played against local football side Dubai Celts.
In this 3 part series of interviews — Michael gets a perspective on how the GAA is run in Dubai compared to New York — and gets an insight into Nemo’s tour of Dubai.
Interviews include:
1/3 – Stephen Twomey, who is the former chair of the Middle East County Board and a former Nemo Rangers senior footballer.
2/3 Ross Oates, who is the manager of Dubai Celts senior team
3/3 Alan Morgan, who is also a former Nemo senior footballer and is a bar manager at the Three Monkeys Bar on west 54th Street in Uptown Manhattan.
The Middle East GAA held their annual championships last week – and GAA President Larry McCarthy was in attendance – so the interview took place as the Dubai Celts were preparing for those games.
– Stephen discusses how the GAA is operated in Dubai, touching on the number of people involved etc.
– Ross talks about how many players are involved in Dubai Celts, where and when they train, and the history of the club.
– Alan chats about his glory years in a Nemo Rangers where he won several honors. He also talks about the Dubai trip, his life in New York having also lived there as a child as well as his family including his father Billy Morgan who is a GAA great. Billy won All-Ireland medals as a player and manager with Cork and Nemo. He also steered UCC to several Sigerson Cups.
