Cavan woman Leona Maguire created golfing history Saturday becoming the first Irish woman to win on the LPGA Tour.
at the Drive On Championship in Florida with a stunning final round of 67 for an 18 under par total.
Her win never appeared in doubt, carding seven birdies and just two bogeys today – winning the tournament by 3 strokes
“It’s a bit surreal,” Maguire said after her victory.
“This is 17 years in the making and you kind of wonder if it’s ever going to happen.”
“I’m just really proud how I played all week, especially today. I’ve a lot of people to thank, it’s been a long road.”
She said her win might inspire the next generation of Irish golfers.
“It’s huge for Irish golf. There’s never been an Irish player on the tour level of a winner.
“Hopefully there’s a lot of people watching at home tonight with big smiles on their faces, and little girls watching.”
