Shane Lowry was left ruing what might have been after an overhit bunker shot on his final round at the RBC Heritage derailed his bid for a first major trophy since his Open triumph in 2019.
The Offaly man pitched from the sand into the water on his way to a double-bogey five which blew his spot atop the leaderboard – ultimately leaving him finishing in a tie for third as he did last week in the US Masters.
Lowry started the day one shot off the lead and hit a streak of birdies on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes to stake a claim on the prize.
He moved to -14 and the outright lead as conditions turned at the course,
But disaster struck on the par 3 14th when his bunker shot found the water.
That mistake saw Lowry drop back to -12 and the 35-year-old Lowry needed to find a birdie in the final few holes to force a play-off but a putt on the 17th just would not drop.
His chances evaporated on the 18th when he found the bunker although he salvaged a gutsy par. Lowry eventually had to settle for a share of third on -12.
