The 2019 Open champion is the son of 1982 All-Ireland medal winner Brendan
Golfer Shane Lowry is set to become a sponsor of the Offaly GAA county board.
Lowry, who is now based in Florida, will provide financial backing with a particular focus on underage structures in the county.
The 2019 Open champion is well-known for his love of Gaelic Games and the deal is a major boost to the county board’s coffers.
The current world number 44 golfer will also support Offaly GAA regarding commercial and fundraising activities.
Lowry confirmed the news on social media and said he was looking forward to the partnership.
“I’m very excited to come on board with Offaly GAA,” Lowry tweeted.
“I hope that the work I do along with the county board over the next number of years will get Offaly back to the top table of GAA.”
Offaly have not won an All-Ireland title since the infamous defeat of Kerry’s 5-in-a-row seeking team in 1982.
Lowry’s father, Brendan, along with his uncles Mick and Seán, were members of the team that day.
The county board said in a statement that Lowry’s “experience and expertise” will help improve the development of players in the county.
“Shane will support Offaly GAA’s commercial and fundraising initiatives to help progress improvements in our underage coaching programmes and develop educational bursaries for our young players.”
“We are on a journey in Offaly GAA and it is fantastic to have Shane on board particularly supporting our coaching and games initiatives, which we hope will benefit all our clubs and players.”
The board did not reveal the financial details of the partnership.
